John Short opened the scoring for Leeds after three minutes, with George Ainsley adding a second less than twenty minutes later. Paddy Coad reduced the arrears from the penalty spot a minute before half-time. Two minutes after the second half started Aubrey Powell got Leeds' third before Gregg again reduced the deficit after sixty-one minutes to make it 3-2. David Cochrane made it 4-2 with ten minutes left on the clock.

Match Report: From the Irish Times (Thanks to Steve Bell for Report)

"Leeds followed up their win against Shelbourne on Friday night by defeating Shamrock Rovers at Milltown yesterday by four goals to two."

"In marked contrast to the display given by Shelbourne, Rovers held their own throughout, and the exchanges always held the interest of a crowd which was small in comparison with the attendance at Friday's game."

"The standard of football by both sides was first-class and the match was very exciting for the greater part."

"When Leeds scored two goals after little more than twenty minutes, it looked like they were going to accumulate a big score. Rovers, however, fought back with their traditional determination, and they succeeded in reducing the arrears before the interval."

"Soon after half-time, Leeds netted their third goal, but Rovers came again to force home a further score, which was, however, nullified when Cochrane put on a fourth ten minutes from time to make victory certain for Leeds."

"Though there was no doubt that Leeds deserved their win and were the better team, Rovers can feel well pleased with their performance."

"Rovers new goalkeeper, Godwin, made a splendid debut, and included among many fine saves a penalty kick by Powell. Clarke was inclined to be a trifle wild near the end, but he made many valuable clearances."

"Godwin brought off a great save from Cochrane shortly after the opening, and from the resulting corner Short crashed the ball home with a good drive, the goal coming after three minutes' play. Coad then hit the crossbar with Twomey beaten, and Gregg was inches wide with a shot. Gregg then sent Twomey full-length to save a shot."

"Cochrane and Powell combined to make an opening for Ainsley, who beat two men, pivoted, and scored from close range. Just before half-time Coad converted a penalty."

"Powell got the third goal for Leeds on the resumption from a close free. Then Rovers swept down, Coad sent to O'Byrne, who passed to Gregg, who scored, with Leeds appealing for off-side. This goal came after sixteen minutes of the second half."

"Cochrane ended the scoring ten minutes from the end, when he beat Godwin from a narrow angle. Three minutes later Powell's penalty kick was well saved by Godwin."
